Computers for Your Small Business

By selfemployedblog | March 27, 2006

Deciding what operating system to use for your small business can be a daunting task.  It may all boil down to what types of software programs you will need to perform daily tasks.  I have worked on both Windows and Apple (OS X) operating systems and they both get the job done for the purposes I need them for.  However, after switching to a Mac, I don’t see myself going back to a Windows OS any time in the future.  I do keep a Windows laptop handy for checking web site displays as that is part of my job.

There are programs that are built and work better on Windows than on a Mac.  For instance, I have read countless reviews of how much the Quickbooks finance software works very well on Windows and only so-so on a Mac.  Those are the types of decisions you’ll have to ponder for your business.  I am a little biased in my opinion as I love OS X and all that it offers.  I am not aware of the types of programs available for OS X that would help to run a small store for example, but I’m sure there are many to choose from.  There are always options, it is just a matter of trial and error and finding the best fit.

Here is a great web site that compares Windows XP with Mac OS X: XvsXP.com

Both operating systems cater to small business.  My best advice would be to ask other small business owners what they use and/or have tried.  Create a pros versus cons list, read plenty of reviews, and know your budget.  After much research, you should be able to make a sound decision and hopefully get your business running on the right foot tech wise.
