Some Fortune 500 companies do it, everyday people do it, but would your business benefit from having a blog? My answer is yes. It definitely couldn’t hurt. If you aren’t sure just what a blog is, here is a definition from Wikipedia:

A blog (a portmanteau made by contracting the phrase “web log“) is a website in which items are posted on a regular basis and displayed in reverse chronological order. Like other media, blogs often focus on a particular subject, such as food, politics, or local news. Some blogs function as online diaries. A typical blog combines text, images, and links to other blogs, web pages, and other media related to its topic. Since its appearance in 1995, blogging has emerged as a popular means of communication, affecting public opinion and mass media around the world.

Blogging has been around for years and has only gained in popularity. Many blogs are useful and informative and there are many that I visit regularly. Creating a blog for your business could benefit you in several ways. For one, your customers may be genuinely interested in the nuts & bolts of running your business. You would be able to communicate to your customers the steps you are taking in bringing them the best products or service. In turn, your customers can provide direct communication to you if they have positive or negative feedback for what your business is providing.

Another benefit is free marketing. Blogs can reach millions of readers everyday. That means more potential customers for you. If you gain a loyal following with your blog, you get the best advertising of them all, and that is word of mouth about your products or services. Blogs are also a low cost alternative for small businesses that can’t afford to hire a web company to build and brand their company web site. You can have a free blog up and running in a matter of minutes and you don’t need to know HTML to begin. Below are a few of the free and/or low cost blogging services you can use:

Blogger

Wordpress

Movable Type

Those should give you a step in the right direction. If you want to research other blogs out in the blogosphere, check out the links below:
