Fitness for the Self-Employed
By selfemployedblog | May 22, 2006
Exercise is important in everyone’s daily life, but as a self-employed individual, you may find it harder to fit in than most people. The self-employed keep odd hours and sometimes work very long hours so it is difficult to fit in an hour or two for exercise.
Lately I have been getting back into an exercise routine so that I can shed some unwanted pounds. My work requires me to sit 8 or more hours a day in front of my computer. That is a lot of inactivity. I have incorporated a new exercise schedule into my daily routine which consists of going to the gym in the morning to peform 2 miles on any cardio machine. I usually jump on a treadmill and run for 2 miles.
In the afternoon, I then take a break and tune in to the fitness channel and do thirty minutes of weight training with one of my favorite exercise shows. I think it’s important to have a balance of cardio and weight training. Here are some tips that help me to put more fitness into my schedule:
- Food Shopping - Shop for your weekly meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner) on the weekend. Having all of your meals planned sure does save time especially when you’re hard at work and hardly have time to pick up a meal at a restaurant. It will also help you make better food choices and minimize those fast food runs.
- Gym Membership - If your budget allows, join a local gym. There are various types of exercise equipment to use and being self-employed, you can take advantage and go mid-morning or early afternoon when it’s less crowded. I love going either early to mid-morning because I can use any machine without worry of a time limit due to over crowding.
- Take Breaks - When you take your breaks, take some time to stretch or pop-in an exercise video or watch an exercise program (if you have the FitTV station). I particularly like this as it gives me a boost of energy during my afternoon.
Of course, always consult with your physician before starting any new exercise routine. I think when you fit in exercise, you’ll find yourself more productive, less stressed, and more energized. Since I’ve started back to it, I’ve already felt the positive effects.
