Pondering a Full Time Job

By selfemployedblog | April 1, 2006

I’ve been working on my own for a little over a year now and needless to say, I am still learning a lot.  A few weeks ago, I even pondered taking on a full time job once again.  The thought had not entered my mind until I received an email from an aquaintance who wanted to give me first dibs for a job opening which paid quite a hefty salary.  Of course, the thought of having much more income was nothing to sneeze at but I had to ask myself a few questions.

Would I want to commute?
The commute was at best 1 hour and 15 minutes each way.

Would I be happy in the coporate world?
I quit my last job for the very reason of not being happy. The coporate lifestyle was bringing me down. Why would I want to put myself through it again even for more money?

Giving Up
Feelings of defeat before I even tried becoming really successful on my own came into play. I am doing ok finanacially and I am working hard to meet my goals. If I took on a full time job, it would take me twice as long to achieve my goals as I could only work on them on the weekends.

Loved Ones
I see my family and friends more now than I ever did before and it’s great. I love being there for them and being able to spend time with them.

Time
Most of all, would I want to give up my time? I have more time now than ever. I set my own schedule and I can come and go as I please. No one is telling when and how to do my job.

Of all the questions above, my biggest concern was the commute.  I promised myself that if I ever take on a job again, my commute will be no more than 30 minutes away and at least in the same county.  Sometimes you can’t follow the dollar signs. You have to do what makes you happy.  I rather work part time and keep my own business going, than to commute 2.5 hours each day and still have to put up with office politics. In the end, time and happiness is much more important to me.
