Self Employed Motivation
By selfemployedblog | March 23, 2006
Most of us face a slump once in awhile. Sometimes you may feel unmotivated when you see the pile of work waiting for you at the start of your day. You may not have the energy or creativity on certain days to go land that client or bring that new idea into life. How do you maintain the motivation to kick your productivity into high gear?
Personally, what keeps me motivated are my clients. Yes, they are my bread and butter and it makes me so happy when I am able to complete a project for them on time and beyond their expectations. The compliments I receive make me remember why I am working for myself in the first place. When my clients are happy, they refer me to other people, which helps to grow my client base. It is always satisfying keeping my clients happy.
Yet, sometimes, I still need that extra push to maintain great service and high productivity. I have been self-employed for a little over a year now. I am still growing and still trying to find answers along the way. I love to watch motivating movies. For me, those movies include “Wall Street”, “Boiler Room”, and “Glengarry Glenross”. If you’ve seen all three, you know that they are based around the same theme, money. What I love about these films are the characters motivation levels and their drive to succeed no matter the cost. That doesn’t mean getting involved in illegal activities in which these movies portray, but appreciate the moxie a lot of the characters have and use it to fuel your own motivation.
I don’t just find motivation from movies but also from friends. A lot of my friends are also self-employed and they inspire me to keep going when I see how successful they are becoming. Another way to stay motivated is to read and stay up to date in your industry. As Gordon Gekko states in “Wall Street”:
I know of no more valuable commodity than information.
Next time you’re feeling uninspired and unmotivated, take a step back and realize why you became or why you want to be self-employed in the first place. Write motivating words on a white board or post it notes. Place them in areas you are every day like your desk or on a mirror or make it your computer desktop wallpaper. Stay motivated!
