Using A Temp Agency To Your Advantage
By selfemployedblog | March 18, 2007
Being known as a “temp” in our society is often looked down upon. However, you can’t deny how large a part temps (temporary employment) play in the workforce. Temps were often utilized at my former place of employment and more often than not, a good temp was offered full time employment with the company. Being a temp is not all that bad depending on how you wish to use it to your advantage.
How Temp Agencies Work
Temp agencies find people to fill job postings with other companies. You work for the temp agency which pays you. There are different types of temp agencies. Some specialize in specified industries, others specialize in permanent job placement, and some focus on temporary job placement. You shouldn’t be paying the temp agency (be aware of scams.) The agencies make their money by marking up your wage (which they charge to their clients) and taking a percentage.
Enjoy Your Freedom
If you have a skill that is in demand and want the flexibility of working when you feel like it, then temping may be what you’re looking for. Some people will use temp agencies to find them placement with companies anywhere from a few days to several months or more. After working for a few months or weeks, they can take off on a vacation to go skiing or to pursue other fun activities. When they are ready to work again they just let the agency know they are available.
Avoiding Boredom
More often than not, boredom plays a major part in why many people are currently experiencing little or no job satisfaction. If you feel stuck in a rut and want more spontaneity then working for different companies for short periods of time may provide the job satisfaction you are searching for.
Getting Back Into the Workforce
Temping is a great way to get your feet back into the workforce if you have been unemployed for a long period of time. It can get you comfortable working for a company and may even land you the dream job you were looking for.
Utilizing temp agencies can also help make ends meet if you are newly self-employed. Temporary jobs can help fill the gaps while you are building your business. If you enjoy more freedom and more spontaneity with your career, then temping may be right up your alley.
