What Motivates People to Quit Their Job?
By selfemployedblog | March 5, 2007
Many former co-workers of mine have taken the road of self-employment around the same time I did. Today, I received news from another former co-worker who has put in his resignation and is taking off to start his own business. I was so excited at hearing the news because I know how talented he is and that he will be a success in any endeavor he he takes on. We chatted for a few minutes about how scary quitting a 9 to 5 can be and also about the benefits that come along with it as well.
All self-employed individuals had their own motivation for leaving their jobs to strike out on their own. I can list a few (including what we talked about in our conversation) that motivated me to leave the rat race:
- Being forced to do things you can’t do
- Co-workers that constantly complain
- Poor management
- Long hours
- The boss
- No room for growth
- Boring
- Long commute
- You want to fulfill your entrepreneurial spirit
Quitting a current job for a new job has a much lower risk than quitting to become self-employed. If you choose to quit to start up your own business the key is to plan as much as you can. You can’t plan for everything but at least try to save up as much money as you can before you leave and have some type of blueprint to follow so that you are not wondering what to do next. Network as much as you can and let others know that you are starting your own business. It is a risky process but it can be fun as well.
Whatever the reason for quitting is, it has to be right for you. I personally feel that if you’re unhappy for any reason, that is a good enough reason to find something else.
