Working Outside the Office
By selfemployedblog | October 18, 2006
One of the cool things about being self-employed (particularly if you do most work on a computer) is that you can be mobile. Since I’ve been self-employed, I have yet to tote my laptop to the nearest coffee shop or book store to hang out and do some work. A lot has to do with the fact that most of my work files are on my desktop and I’m simply to lazy to synch up my laptop. Most coffee shops and book stores have free wireless internet and if not, I think their may be reasonable rates with whichever ISP they choose to use.
There are some nice benefits of working outside of your office. First off, if you’re like me and work from home, it is great to get out and socialize whenever you can. If you’ve ever seen the coffee house crowds with their laptops, it does appear that everyone is in their own world, however, I’m sure you can still strike up a conversation or two.
Working in a coffee shop also allows for delicious coffee breaks. You can feast on some baked goods along with a latte. A book store allows for browsing your favorite magazines or catching up on a good book.
Another nice benefit is just a change of pace. Even working from home can get boring after awhile. Why not take your laptop someplace with a view and enjoy it while you think about your other friends who may be stuck in their cubicles breathing recycled air.
Maybe I’ll even give working outside of the office a try. I’ve always wanted to and I’m sure it would be a fun way to change up my usual routine.
